Toby Samuel (15) has won the ITF Junior Grade 4 tournament on the Wirral, beating his age-group rival Felix Gill 7-5 6-3 in the final. These two boys are the best placed 2002 born Brits on the ITF Junior rankings at 297 and 254 respectively.
(Suffice to say that these rankings will become a whole lot better when the 2000 born players drop out at the end of next month (there are 91 of those on the list); and that both boys rank in the world’s top 60 in their age group. There is plenty of time for them to improve their relative positions.)
Toby’s training programme is split between West Hants in Bournemouth, where he lives, and Bath, one of the newly installed Regional Development Centres. He is at school at Bournemouth Collegiate School. Felix is trained by Gary Naughton at David Lloyd Coventry and has already made the decision that tennis is his future.
Both made easy progress to the final, but it was Samuel who prevailed to notch his second ITF title but his first Grade 4. So progress by another measure and another significant milestone for Toby. Well done!
